GOD'S WORD

3 David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah,

as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.

4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen:

and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah,

David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David,

and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

7 And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

8 And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.

Brothers and Sisters now let's review what we just learned, from today's devotional.

First, we learn who was Hadadezer was.

  • Hadadezer was a king of Zobah in Syria during the time of King David.
  • His kingdom extended as far eastward as the Euphrates River and as far southward as Ammon.
  • The name Hadadezer itself is derived from Hadad, which means “help.”

Second, we learn where is Hadadezer mentioned in the KJV Bible.

Hadadezer appears in several passages:

  • 2 Samuel 8:3-8: In this account, Hadadezer suffered a severe defeat at the hands of David as he attempted to restore his power near the Euphrates. David also defeated 22,000 Syrians who came to aid Hadadezer.
  • 2 Samuel 10:5-14: The Ammonites formed a league with other Aramean rulers to protect themselves from David’s wrath. David’s general, Joab, defeated them, and Hadadezer was part of this conflict.
  • 2 Samuel 10:15-18: Hadadezer’s army faced another defeat at Helam, and he eventually made peace with Israel, becoming a tributary.

Third, we learn the about the key battles and victories of Hadadezer:

  • Hadadezer engaged in battles against David, but in each encounter, he was defeated.
  • His military campaigns were marked by losses, ultimately leading to his submission to David’s authority.

Fourth, we learn about the Spiritual Themes and Lessons from Hadadezer’s Story:

  • Submission to God’s Will: Hadadezer’s defeats highlight the importance of submitting to God’s purposes. Even powerful rulers must yield to divine plans.
  • Consequences of Pride: Hadadezer’s desire for power and expansion led to his downfall. Pride often blinds us to our limitations.
  • God’s Sovereignty: Despite Hadadezer’s efforts, God orchestrated events to fulfill His purposes through David’s victories.

Fifth, we learn about the impact on the Broader Narrative of the KJV Bible:

  • Hadadezer’s story underscores the theme of divine providence throughout the Bible. God uses both great and small events to accomplish His will.
  • His legacy serves as a reminder that earthly power and conquests are fleeting, while God’s sovereignty endures.

In summary, Hadadezer’s encounters with David reveal deeper spiritual truths about humility, God’s sovereignty, and the consequences of pride. His legacy echoes throughout Scripture, emphasizing God’s ultimate control over human affairs. Through Hadadezer’s story, we learn that even the mightiest rulers are subject to divine purposes, and true strength lies in surrendering to God’s will. His defeats serve as a reminder that earthly power is fleeting, but God’s sovereignty endures eternally.

In conclusion, the story of Hadadezer in the KJV Bible stands as a testament to the complexities of power, faith, and divine intervention. Through his victories, defeats, and enduring legacy, Hadadezer offers readers profound insights into the human experience and the intricate workings of God's plan. As we reflect on Hadadezer's journey, we are reminded of the enduring relevance of biblical narratives in shaping our understanding of spiritual truths and the timeless lessons they impart.
