"Christian's Power of Attorney"

October 26, 2023

My dear brothers and sisters, I come to you today to talk about the power of attorney that comes with having true friendship. Have you ever heard the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well, I like to say that “seven proofs of friendship keep the blues away.”

Today I want to talk about these seven proofs of friendship, and how they can act as the Christian's power of attorney.

The first proof of friendship is loyalty. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times.” Loyalty is something that is not earned but is given freely. Loyalty is a bond that cannot be broken. When you have a loyal friend, it’s like having a power of attorney—they are always there for you no matter what.

The second proof of friendship is trust. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Trust is the foundation of any friendship. When you can trust someone, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be honest with you and will never lead you astray.

The third proof of friendship is forgiveness. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Forgiveness is an essential part of any friendship. When you can forgive someone, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be there for you, even when you make mistakes.

The fourth proof of friendship is communication. James 5:16 tells us, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Communication is key in any friendship. When you can communicate your feelings and concerns with someone, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be there to listen and give advice.

The fifth proof of friendship is understanding. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says, “Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” When someone truly understands you, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be there to lift you up and provide comfort in difficult times.

The sixth proof of friendship is acceptance. Romans 15:7 tells us, “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” When someone accepts you for who you are, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be there to provide support and encouragement in times of need.

The seventh proof of friendship is joy. Psalm 16:11 says, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” When someone brings joy into your life, it’s like having a power of attorney—they will always be there to bring happiness and celebrate life's successes.
