- A Prayer of Distress is Like a Single Branch in a Dark Forest -
November 30, 2023
Good morning, Brothers and Sisters! I want to thank you, for clicking onto my devotional today. Today, I'm going to be talking about the 3rd prayer of distress, To the Chief Musician on Neginoth.
My devotional today is inspired by an old story my grandma, my mother's momma used to tell me, when I was a young boy. She said that there were two men walking through a dark forest. One man was confident and sure of himself, while the other was afraid and hesitating. The first man said to the second, “When we get to the other side, I’ll show you something that will make you feel better.”
But when they got to the other side, all the man showed him was a tree with a single branch. The man said, “This tree is like your prayer life. You may be in the darkest of places, but if you reach out and cling to that branch, it will carry you through.”
Brothers and sisters, this is the same with the 3rd prayer of distress, To the Chief Musician on Neginoth. When we are in a time of distress, we can turn to the Lord for help. The Psalmist says in Psalm 57:1-2, “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”
The Psalmist is calling out to God in a time of distress, just as we all do when we are in need of help. But the key is to remember that God is always there for us, even when we don’t feel like He is. We can take refuge in Him and cling to Him in times of trouble.
The Bible also reminds us that God is our source of strength and hope in times of trouble. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
We can put our trust in God and know that He will give us strength when we are feeling weak and hope when we are feeling discouraged. The King James Bible, says "Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." (Deuteronomy 31:6).
So Brothers and Sisters, let us remember today that even in our darkest times, God is there for us. He can carry us through our troubles and provide us with strength and hope. We just need to reach out and cling to Him in prayer. As Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892 was a Baptist preacher in England.) once said, “Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.”
Let us all cling to the Lord in prayer today and remember that He will never leave us nor forsake us. No matter how dark our situation may be, with God we can always overcome it. A prayer of distress is like a single branch in a dark forest; it carries us through no matter what.
